Do Wonders - Wigs for Women with Cancer

Love and hope are alive and well at Lillian Lee Salon!

About Do Wonders

Do Wonders is a non-profit organization formed to donate fairly-used wigs to ladies with cancer. The Lillian Lee Salon then cuts and styles these wigs to suit the client at no cost to them.

We’ve joined forces with the American Cancer Society. Do Wonders is working with the national program Look Good…Feel better and The American Cancer Society.

“I understand the emotional stress of cancer and strive to treat you from the outside to lift your spirits and help heal you on the inside."

 "Dear Lillian,

When I learned I had cancer I was devastated, but with people like you in my life it makes me get through the day.  I was finally released from the hospital yesterday.  I am stronger than ever and going to fight the disease.  I want to thank you for the beautiful wig as it has restored my dignity and self-esteem.

Love,

Rosa Holowen"

A Thank You from a member of Teaneck Shul who wishes to remain anonymous

September 7, 2009

"Nearly two years ago, after going through surgery for cancer I  was unexpectedly facing chemotherapy and the guarantee that I would lose my hair. My illness had already put my family in a terrible financial position and insurance did not cover a wig.
I turned to TeaneckShuls for assistance.

Motzei Shabbat, November 2007, an anonymous posting brought me 42 responses from members of the TShuls community. It not only warmed my heart but made me realize what a wonderful this community is.  I took the advice of the majority of respondents and went to  Lillian Lee and her "Do Wonders" program. The program is free and designed to provide wigs to women with cancer (and other medical conditions causing hair loss) who can't afford them. In a very private, warm and loving environment, Lillian prepared me for my chemo and shaved my head, at my request, so I wouldn't have to experience the pain of my hair breaking and falling out. She fitted me with a beautiful European human hair wig. I left the salon feeling upbeat, confident and strong to face my first round of chemo the next day. Now, two years later, with my own hair grown back, I am about to return "my" wig to her, for another patient to use.

At the time, I had started to write each of you words of thanks for your generosity, but it was just too emotional. However, two years later and in good health, I now have the strength to say thank you to the TShuls community who was so willing to help a stranger through such a dark period. The offers, kindnesses, generosity and prayers for a "refuah shleima" truly were overwhelming. I cannot go through these Yom Tovim thanking Hashem for all the blessings He has given me and not include all  of you. Finally, thank you, the members of TShuls who were there for me.

With a full heart of gratitude, I want to wish you all of you a
Shana Tova and G'mar Chatima Tova."

A Thank You from the American Cancer Society

Dear Lillian,

We have been receiving such rave reviews on the wig fittings you are providing women with Cancer. Thank you so much!  The wigs you provide are beautiful and the women feel well-tended to in your salon.  We are so very grateful to know you are there to help.

The American Cancer Society continues to provide a free wig for women who are losing their hair.  When we are unable to fit them, however, we are grateful to be able to refer them to you.  Please let us know if there is anything we can do to assist you as you assist the women you meet.

With Sincere Gratitude,

Cathy Lauer
